Infrared - Uses, Applications and Hazards

Information here can be used by school and college/university students to achieve better understanding of infrared radiation and its uses, and for reference and guidance.

Infrared radiation was discovered by Sir William Frederick Herschel in 1800 when he was testing filters to observe the sun spots. Herschel was a German born, British musician and astronomer who is also famous for so many other discoveries and his contribution to music.

Did you want to know what infrared radiations are? How infrared works? The different regions in the infrared spectrum? The properties, detection and some interesting facts about infrared? If yes, please follow the link below!

Working, discovery, detection, properties and facts about infrared radiation

Uses of Infrared

Have you ever wondered how the night vision devices worked, how firefighters found people inside thick smoke filled buildings, how astronomers saw objects that were light years away amidst the thick cloud and dust in the universe and space, how infrared lamps and infrared lasers worked, how guided missiles worked etc...? The link below has detailed information on these questions

Uses, applications and hazards of infrared radiation

Applications of Infrared

Also have you wondered how thermal therapies worked, how the police look for missing people and people who have escaped into the thick forest, how infrared imaging worked and so many more!!!

Infrared radiation even helps with studying the under paintings! It helps with chemical studies, has a wide range of applications in medical field, is used in meteorology, climatology and archaeology! There are so many uses and applications. Please follow the link below to read about the uses and applications of infrared in more detail.

I hope this has been of some use to you. Please feel free to feedback. I would like to hear from you.

Have a great rest of the week.

Peace and good luck

Infrared Radiation - Discovery, working and properties

I've been working really hard on two articles that I started writing when I was preparing some notes for GCSE Physics. I was trying to put some easy points together for students doing their GCSE science and in that process, my research for literature led to me writing down two hubs, one of which I am sharing here.

This can be used as a reference for an easy understanding of Infrared radiation for school and college/university students.

How does Infrared Radiation work? Discovery, Detection, Properties and Facts about Infrared

Now coming back to the hub, it was about Infrared radiation, which is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and lies on the invisible region above the visible red region.

I meant above the red region, because its wavelength is longer than the visible red light. It is infrared (infra means below), because its frequency is less than the frequency of visible red light.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

The equation below will solve your confusion.

The equation for the velocity or speed of light is

Velocity of light = Wavelength x Frequency

We all know that velocity of light is a constant. So if the wavelength of a particular light increases, its frequency has to decrease (decrease in energy) and vice-versa, for the velocity to be a constant.

Also look at the relationship between Wavelength, Frequency and Energy:

Infrared radiation is a very interesting form of radiation that was discovered by a German born British musician and astronomer Sir Frederick William Herschel in 1800.

Infrared radiation heats up the objects on which it falls. All objects that have a temperature above absolute zero (zero degrees Kelvin), emit infrared radiation.

Interesting Fact: A block of ice emits infrared radiation. Although it is cold, its temperature is above absolute zero!

Infrared red radiation travels with the speed of light and they can be absorbed or reflected depending on the substance on which they fall.

I wish you all a lovely week ahead.

Liver transplant

Not good news here to share today! One of my friends' friend was diagnosed with Liver Cirrhosis more than a year before and has been under medical treatment. His health has shown no signs of improvements but has deteriorated to a state that doctors have advised for a liver transplant.

Liver transplants are recommended for people who have an End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD), which means there is no other cure other than a transplant, and that their liver has been damaged to an extent, that it cannot perform its normal functions.

It seems that he was so confused because of all the worries, anxieties and health issues and has had no idea of how to get a donor and his sister has now come forward to be a donor. Doctors will be removing 70% of his sister's liver for transplantation. This is called the Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT). I did not know about living donors before this!

Usually the surgeries for liver transplant go on for anything between 6 to more than 12 hours depending on the complications and health of the patient. In this case, doctors have estimated approximately 15 hours for the surgery that involves both the patient and the donor (patient's sister) to undergo the surgery.

The surgery is due to take place in another week, hopefully after another visit to the doctors' before which both the donor and the patient will have to get ready for the transplant and be prepared.

There is so much of after care required after the transplant and medicines that have to be taken life-long to overcome rejection of new liver and infection related issues.

If you are interested in reading about the liver transplant, what is done, why it is done and how it is done, please check the link below. It is a hub that I wrote after reading about this process.

What is Liver Transplant - How and Why it is done?

Also if you wish to read about how one gets prepared for the liver transplant, please follow the link below.

How to Get Ready for a Liver Transplant?

Praying for his (friend's friend) and his sister's health, and thinking of everyone around the world who goes through the same situation. So many liver transplants and liver issues can be prevented by taking care of one's health and by being precautionary.

Also there are a lot of people who are on waiting and list and die before a donor becomes available. In order to avoid this from happening, we should all go forward for organ donation. By doing so, we will be able to change the lives of not one, but so many people in this world!

Peace and love.....
