Liver transplant

Not good news here to share today! One of my friends' friend was diagnosed with Liver Cirrhosis more than a year before and has been under medical treatment. His health has shown no signs of improvements but has deteriorated to a state that doctors have advised for a liver transplant.

Liver transplants are recommended for people who have an End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD), which means there is no other cure other than a transplant, and that their liver has been damaged to an extent, that it cannot perform its normal functions.

It seems that he was so confused because of all the worries, anxieties and health issues and has had no idea of how to get a donor and his sister has now come forward to be a donor. Doctors will be removing 70% of his sister's liver for transplantation. This is called the Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT). I did not know about living donors before this!

Usually the surgeries for liver transplant go on for anything between 6 to more than 12 hours depending on the complications and health of the patient. In this case, doctors have estimated approximately 15 hours for the surgery that involves both the patient and the donor (patient's sister) to undergo the surgery.

The surgery is due to take place in another week, hopefully after another visit to the doctors' before which both the donor and the patient will have to get ready for the transplant and be prepared.

There is so much of after care required after the transplant and medicines that have to be taken life-long to overcome rejection of new liver and infection related issues.

If you are interested in reading about the liver transplant, what is done, why it is done and how it is done, please check the link below. It is a hub that I wrote after reading about this process.

Praying for his (friend's friend) and his sister's health, and thinking of everyone around the world who goes through the same situation. So many liver transplants and liver issues can be prevented by taking care of one's health and by being precautionary.

Also there are a lot of people who are on waiting and list and die before a donor becomes available. In order to avoid this from happening, we should all go forward for organ donation. By doing so, we will be able to change the lives of not one, but so many people in this world!

Peace and love.....
